Best+Games+of+2018

Avery Bertrand, Staff Writer

This year was a big year for games. Some games knew what they were doing, and… some didn’t. Here I’ve come up with a good list of some of the best games of the year.

  1. Monster Hunter World

Monster Hunter: World is an action role-playing game developed and published by Capcom. It was released worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January 2018, with a Microsoft Windows version in August 2018. Within a few weeks of release, the game became the fastest-selling game in Capcom’s history. It eventually became their best-selling game, with 10.9 million copies shipped by September 2018.

  1. Forza Horizon 4

Forza Horizon 4 is a multi-platform open-world racing video game developed by Playground Studios and published by Microsoft Studios. Released on October 2nd, 2018, the game features over 420 licensed cars and a fictionalized representation of a town in the United Kingdom. It’s the 4th installment of the Forza Horizon series. Forza Horizon 4 won four awards and was nominated for five. Its awards include Best Racing Game for both Gamescom and Game Critics Awards, Xbox Game of the Year by Golden Joystick, and Best Sports/Racing game by The Game Awards 2018.

  1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a crossover fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and published by Nintendo. It is the fifth game in the Super Smash Bros. series and includes every playable character from previous Super Smash Bros. games—ranging from Nintendo’s mascots to characters from third-party franchises—and several newcomers. This game was extremely anticipated by many communities and was very popular while in development. Especially when they added Isabelle about a month before release. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ended being the fastest sold Smash game of all time.

  1. Spider Man (2018)

Marvel’s Spider-Man is an action-adventure game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was made only for the PlayStation 4, based on the Marvel Comics superhero Spider-Man. It was released on September 7th, 2018 and sold 3.3 million copies in 3 days. Surprisingly, it beat God of War’s sale record AND Spiderman: Homecoming’s record (for profit). This was very anticipated by the PS4 community, and there were memes made about it because the game was not available on Xbox One.

  1. Detroit: Become Human

Released earlier in 2018, Detroit: Become Human is a highly interactive adventure game developed by Quantic Dream and published by Sony. A week after release they sold one million copies which are more than 59 million dollars. Detroit: Become Human was met with generally favorable reviews from critics, who praised the setting, visuals, smaller moments in the story, main characters, their voice actors, the impact choices had on the narrative, and flowchart feature. The game has tons of hours of gameplay in it and an unknown amount of endings, which Quantic Dream most likely has behind closed doors.

  1. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a western themed adventure game developed and published by the notorious Rockstar games. It was talked about a lot by the gaming community – especially the ‘console only’ aspect. It was extremely marketed and anticipated before its release and was universally acclaimed by critics,

who praised the story, characters, visuals, soundtrack, open world, and a considerable level of detail. On its opening weekend, it generated over 725 million dollars and sold over 17 million copies in 2 weeks. Red Dead Redemption 2 received a number of perfect scores and awards, including the “Critics Choice Award” at the 2018 Golden Joystick Awards, and honors such as “Best Narrative” and “Best Score/Music” at The Game Awards 2018.

  1. God of War

Developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony, God of War is the eighth installment to the series and the sequel to God of War III. The gameplay is vastly different from the previous games, as it was rebuilt from the ground up. When it was released it sold 3.1 million copies in 3 days and 5 million copies in the first month. This set the record as PS4’s fastest selling game by a landslide. 4 months after its release, it surpassed 9 million players. God of War was also named Game of the Year by The Game Awards. It was also awarded Best Game Direction.

Honorable Mentions

Fortnite wasn’t on this list because it came out in 2017. However, it did win best ongoing game by Game of the Year Awards. Another honorable mention is Fallout 76 which was rejected by the community. A lot of people hated it. Also, IGN scored The Culling 2 a 2/10 calling it a ‘royal mess’.
